About Me
Ancestra, The Vino Theater 2022
Hi, I'm Maggie!
I am an NYC-based theater artist, originally from Boston, MA. I am a recent graduate from Pace University's Sands College of Performing Arts. I hold my BA in Directing, with minors in Creative Writing and Arts and Entertainment Management. While at Pace, I was a member of the International Performance Ensemble, where I trained in Devised Theater at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona in Spain.
I love to investigate modern issues and engage with burning questions from a unique or new perspectives. My artistic goal is to make even the most mundane moments explode on stage through precise and active staging. As a director, I untangle complicated relationship dynamics and confront taboo topics in order to uncover humanity's unspoken desires.
I primarily direct new work because I am thrilled by the untapped questions and endless possibilities when an audience has no preconceived notions. I am interested in the intersection of a playwright’s original intention and a director’s vision for staging because I believe the collaboration that happens to blend these two perspectives is where the true understanding of a play lives. I love to dig into real-life events connected to a play and utilize this research in the rehearsal room.
My voice as a director is inspired by Riot Grrrl, an underground feminist punk movement, because my work is often girl-centered, opinionated, and through the lens of the female gaze. My work packs the same punch as your favorite early 2000's pop-rock song. My aesthetic is highly theatrical and emphasizes the weird, ridiculous, and wacky.
In pursuit of confronting humanity's deepest flaws and vulnerabilities, I tackle difficult and uncomfortable topics unapologetically. I direct from a place of empathy for every character in a story to create complicated authentic human beings on stage. I especially want to craft female and LGBTQ+ characters who have previously only existed to push forward the stories of straight male characters.
I search for exhilarating reveals in every production I direct; including revelation of space, a sudden shift in relationship dynamics, or an unexpected design element. When a theatrical moment has me on the edge of my seat, that's when I know I have succeeded. I do this by exploding small moments of character tension and heightening beat shifts in the story arc.
It is important to me to create space in all my processes for vulnerability, room to make mistakes, and open conversation. With a background in devised-theater, I work collaboratively and invite everyone in the room to contribute to the creative vision of a piece.
In addition to directing, I have a passion for writing, devising, producing, stage management, and theater education. Click below to view my resume and what is currently inspiring me.
